STEM

The Illinois State Board of Education has recognized that STEM learning environments “foster collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, open inquiry, experimentation and communication, which impacts students' social, emotional and reasoning growth.”

At Hawthorn, STEM courses allow students to work collaboratively on engaging problem-solving experiences that draw on knowledge and skills from the science, technology, engineering and math disciplines. Every Hawthorn student has the opportunity to develop “design thinking” skills that foster continuous learning, address real-world problems and build skills.

At our middle schools, students engage in STEM experiences during STEM Lab courses. These courses include a combination of curricular materials from Lego Robotics, Code.org’s Code Studio, Breakout EDU, as well as teacher-developed projects that incorporate digital citizenship, architectural design and 3D design/printing.

During the 2021-22 school year, Hawthorn is participating in planning and professional development to ensure readiness for the implementation of an updated, robust STEM program at the middle school level in 2022-2023.
