BMX Rider’s Message

“I was a skinny, dorky kid with asthma who was always picked on,” BMX rider Matt Wilhelm tells a group of mesmerized students at Hawthorn Elementary North School during a recent assembly.

Mr. Wilhelm, who has won three X Games medals, two national championships, and a silver medal from the World Championships, shared his struggles as a bully victim and how he persevered through the storm of contention. In one year alone he spoke to children in over 300 schools.

“Matt Wilhelm visited Elementary North and performed BMX bike tricks while sharing a powerful message about perseverance, character, and bullying. The assembly was entertaining and thought-provoking for our students,” said Megan Goldman, assistant principal, Hawthorn Elementary North School.
