Designing and Building Rube Goldberg Machines

What happens when you take a simple task and over complicate it? Fourth-grade classrooms at Elementary North had the fun challenge of designing and building overcomplicated machines to do very simple tasks, such as opening a pizza box or pulling a tissue out of a box. Their machines were inspired by Rube Goldberg, an engineer, who is best known for his wacky cartoons showing complicated machines doing simple things. This STEM activity was the culminating activity for the fourth-grade science unit.
